One of our favorite spots to see these incredible marine mammals is the Manatee Observation Deck at the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge. Manatees love this spot and can typically be seen year-round munching on sea grass and meandering amongst the mangroves. Spotting manatees on Florida’s Space Coast is easy if you know what you’re looking for. Check out this blog to learn the sure signs of a sea cow

Protecting Manatees

Manatees are slow-moving animals. It’s extremely important for boaters to be wary of manatees in the water. No Wake Zones are posted all throught out the Indian River Lagoon to warn boaters in manatee hang out spots. Make sure that you’re obeying the idle speed in these areas and wear polarized lenses to watch out for wayward manatees in the channels.

Manatee in Distress?

If you happen to see a manatee in distress while you’re on your Space Coast Vacation, please stay away from the animal and call in the professionals. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission is active in our community and are trained to handle hurt, sick or otherwise distressed animals. Here’s a quick guide to who you should call if you see a manatee in need of assistance.
