Alligators

Best time to see: Every day

American Alligators are everywhere on the Space Coast. It’s important to understand that any body of water may contain one of these modern dinosaurs. So, please keep your distance and be aware of your surroundings. The safest and most thrilling way to experience an alligator encounter here in Florida is on an airboat ride of the Saint Johns River. Airboats whisk you safely above the water in their preferred habitat where you’ll see them basking on the shore and swimming around the grasses. Keep your eyes peeled when walking along canals and make sure to fish from piers in areas where you’re unfamiliar with the local wildlife.

Alligator Safety

If you’re not keen on getting on an airboat, you can spot gators in nearly every body of water on Florida’s Space Coast. It is important to remember that alligators are very dangerous creatures and will ambush anything onshore they think is prey. Stay on the trails and DO NOT venture near or in the water while you’re on the Space Coast. Keep an eye on your small animals and children around water. Here are a few parks and trails where you can spot alligators while keeping a safe and comfortable distance.

Alligators are very active and territorial during both mating season (May-June) and nesting season (June-July). Use extreme caution during this time, and never approach a wild alligator.
