Archie Carr National Wildlife Refuge

The Archie Carr National Wildlife Refuge in Melbourne Beach is considered by biologist to be the most important nesting area for loggerhead sea turtles in the western hemisphere and the second most important nesting beach in the world. Maintained by federal funds, the refuge was named after the late Dr. Archie Carr, Jr., in honor of his extraordinary contribution to sea turtle conservation, the refuge was designated to protect the habitat for both loggerhead sea turtles and green turtle nesting in North America.

The refuge also features the Barrier Island Sanctuary Management & Education Center. Located in the heart of the refuge, the center offers exhibits, environmental education programs and tours, and auditorium with orientation/nature films, a gift shop, 3/4 mile foot trail and lagoon launch.
